The workability of the thixotropic mortar is measured through the flow of a given test sample placed on a jolting table, where the flow is obtained through a set number of strokes for the effect of which the table floor is slightly lifted and then falling back into initial position. The method is based on the EN 1015-3. The necessary equipment is:

  • mixer for mortar, conforming to EN 196-1;
  • jolting table and truncated cone mold;
  • measuring caliper for diameters up to 300 mm with 1 mm accuracy;
  • normalized laboratory climate;
  • stopwatch accurate to 1 s.

All materials must be air-conditioned in standardized laboratory climate for a period of not less than 24 hours before mixing.

The flow value must be determined in standardized laboratory climate. The sample should be tested after (10 ± 5) min after (30 ± 5) min or after other time agreed with the manufacturer.

Before the testing, the mortar must be mixed for a period of (20 ± 2) s.

For each time interval, two samples must be tested.

Before starting each test, the floor of the jolting table, the inner surface and the edges of the conical mold must be cleaned with a damp cloth. To measure the flow, the conical mold must be placed centrally on the plate of the jolting table and the mortar must be introduced in two layers, compacting each layer 25 with short strokes of pestle to ensure a uniform filling of the mold. During filling, the conical mold must be locked firmly on the floor to prevent leakage of material from the bottom of the mold.

The mortar diameter on the plate of the jolting table, which has expanded as a result of the energy of the fall, must be measured in two orthogonal directions using the caliper. Record the result to the nearest 1 mm and calculate the mean value of the two tests at each time interval. The flow value is the mean of the results.
