This standard specifies a method to determine the levels of soluble chlorides of fresh mortar.

The sample must be powdered. If the mortar is ready to use, crumble the sample in order to make it pass through a 10 mm sieve; if the mortar is fresh, dry s sample of about 250 g in the oven at 105 ± 5°C at constant mass, crumble it so it can pass through the sieve of 10 mm. Reduce the sample at 50 g and grind it so as to make it pass through the 0.125 mm sieve: this is the test sample.

Weigh 10 ± 0.005 g of sample at temperature of 20 ± 5°C and move it into a polyethylene bottle. Add 100 ml of distilled cold water, close the bottle and mix everything for 60 minutes using a magnetic sieve shaker. Let the bottle and its contents rest for a night and the day after filter the sample in suspension and collect the filtrate in a borosilicate glass of 250 ml. Then acidify the filtrate by the addition of 20 ml of dilute nitric acid and bring it to boil. In the boiling solution add 5 ml of silver nitrate solution by a pipette, let everything boil for 2 minutes and then let cool at temperature lower than 25°C and transfer the contents of the glass into an Erlenmeyer flask 500 ml. Add 5 ml of ferric ammonium sulfate indicator solution and titrate with the ammonium thiocyanate solution.

Perform the same process without the mortar sample and record the volume of ammonium thiocyanate solution used for titration of the blank. Then calculate the percentage of chloride present in the sample.
